Why is it that I never see these things coming? (Sigh.)
So on Friday night, one of my two external hard drives failed. Unfortunately, it was the one with all my digital pictures. On the bright side, the drive didn't completely fail, just the folder with the pictures, which is, of course, the only irreplaceable folder. Grr.
The good news is that I had a backup sourse through March 2007.
The bad news is that I lost every single digital photo for the last 16 months, including about a thrid of the pics I took of Kelleys just last weekend. Owch.
The other piece of good news is that this finally got me to take a good long hard look at online backups and my research has brought me to two recommendations : Mozy and Carbonite. Carbonite won't work with external hard drives or at least I couldn't figure it out. Mozy is what I am currently using and they charge like $5 a month for unlimited storage backup and they come extremely highly recommended by reviewers. Carbonite ranks #1 but like I said, I couldn't make it work with my setup.
I highly recommend backing up digital versions of things that just can't be replaced or you might end up where I am now. Although there are backups out there (CD's that Julie burned for family as gifts, my digital picture frame), I have lost a LOT of data and it never needed to happen.
