Denver 2011

For many years, my Aunt and Godmother Sheila has invited me to visit her in Denver, but for various reasons (cost, lack of vacation days, etc) I have been unable to make it. Now that my brother Cedric has also moved to Denver, the time seemed right to finally honor that request.

The first thing that I noticed about Denver is that there is a general sense that everything is SO new. The roads, the buildings, the bridges, even to a certain extent the housing. There was definitely an older feel to the neighborhoods when Cedric and I visited Maxwell Falls but first things first.

On Thursday morning, I flew out, joining Sheila for lunch and then we drove out to Bear Creek Canyon (I know for a fact I’m going to get my fair share of these names and places wrong so bear with me).

Although the Canyon and surrounding trails was impressive, it was also very difficult to capture the scale of it because there was so much vegetation growing around the canyon. I was very impressed with the style of architecture in Denver and this bridge reflects some of that.

Next, we have a picture of my lovely tour guide and the canyon in the background. You can see the ridge of the cliff in the distance obscured by all of the vegetation in the foreground.

Photobucket

Next, we descended into the canyon via a very well kept trail. We walked down to the small little meandering creek where I took this picture.

Photobucket

As I looked up from the canyon, I could see houses. This one has a view of the canyon through the front and a view of the mountains through the back. Not bad.

Photobucket

Then we went back to the house in Parker and took Sheila’s dog Riley for a walk. Along the walk, we met some “neighbors” who have settled in the golf course. Sheila was telling me that a mountain lion had also been seen on the grounds, presumably hunting the deer. Yikes!

Photobucket

Also on our walk I got some pretty decent shots of the sunset. Here is one.

Photobucket

The next morning I woke up early for whatever reason and headed out to the patio where I took this picture of their view of the mountains. It must be pretty hard to get used to this view on a day in, day out basis but somehow they manage.

Photobucket

On Friday, Sheila and I headed out for a slightly more aggressive day of sight seeing. It was fairly warm outside but not oppressively so.

Our first stop was Red Rocks Music Amphitheatre where the Civilian Conservation Corps carved a pass in the red rocks of the foothills. According to a story in the visitors center, they discovered somewhat by accident that the gap that they had carved had very good acoustical qualities. The Music Amphitheatre was born.

The park also has a fairly stunning view of downtown Denver – it was a bit hazy on this particular day so it’s not perfect but the tall buildings are unmistakable even in the haze.

Photobucket

Next, we went downtown and stopped at a bookstore whose name now escapes. Since I only read on my iPad nowadays, it was strictly a window shopping exercise for me.

While we were there I took some pictures of their Union Station, and what it may lack in size or number of trains running through, it more than makes up for in style.

Photobucket

The Denver Art Museum was next on our trip. Aunt Sheila has a membership so we got in for free (Score!).

Photobucket

As we exited the stairwell, we were met with this rather odd looking sculpture of an in progress art project at the museum. At least I hope it’s still in progress.

Photobucket

Our area of focus on that day was the Native American Art Exhibit.

I felt the museum staff did a really great job of putting enough stuff out on the floor to make it look full but not so much that you feel like you’re walking through a Wal-Mart.

Photobucket

Hey, so what do you do with your buildings when gold comes from the very ground that you walk on? Well you coat them with it – that’s what! This is the state capitol building covered in sparkling gold. Wonder how much Cash 4 Gold would pay for that...

Photobucket

It was pretty crazy hot downtown in the sun so we ate lunch and after a visit with Aunt Marge headed back to the house. After dinner and a walk it was time for me to be on my way. So I bid Sheila a goodbye. It was a great visit and one I wish I’d done much sooner.

Photobucket

On Saturday morning, I woke up and went to Cedric’s house in Centennial and off we went to Maxwell Falls. Cedric came with proper footwear – I did not. This would be a theme throughout the day.

Photobucket

Our first rock was this wimpy little piece here. It may look impressive on the picture but the scale grew considerably as we went further up into the foothills.

Photobucket

Cedric climbed across a tree and channeled his inner Hulk Hogan (or something).

Photobucket

Not content with that pose, we went for something a little grander at the next junction.

Photobucket

My approach was somewhat more introspective. This cliff we found almost completely by accident. We found a lot of things by accident and lost our way by accident, too but that’s later.

Photobucket

Cedric is either going Tron here or Lion King, not sure. But what’s clear is the DRAMA...

Photobucket

Most of the day we spent on one side or other of the creek. Here was the bridge where we crossed. We wouldn’t cross again as we got lost on the way back.

Photobucket

Cedric shows off his mad hops…but hey dude that’s only like a 3 foot gap…?

Photobucket

Finally we made it to the falls and it was pretty awesome. A gentleman sitting there with his dog took our picture and then left us alone to eat lunch in front of the falls. Pretty awesome.

Photobucket

After lunch, Cedric decided to work on his try out for Herbal Essences. Word of advice – keep the day job, bro.

Photobucket

This is where things got interesting. When we were done with lunch we looked up and said “Wow. That’s a tall rock. Let’s CLIMB it!” Cedric with proper footwear got about 80% of the way up. I on the other hand fell flat on my back on the most innocent flat looking stone you’ve ever seen. Boo.

Photobucket

In some locations (like the picture below), the trails were immaculately groomed. In other locations (like the spot we got lost), the trails seem to fade to invisibility leaving us with NO idea where to go.

Photobucket

Where the trail was marked we had no trouble but more times than not we wound up in the middle of nowhere

Photobucket

CEDRIC DECIDED that after we had done (this is on the back from UPPER Maxwell Falls, we parked at the OTHER end of the trail, LOWER Maxwell Falls) that we should go on the Cliff Loop. Maniac.

But the cliff we found there was pretty crazy. Even crazier was Cedric leaning out from an outcropping about 100 yards away from this picture over the edge of the cliff. Mom, don’t read that part. Oops.

Photobucket

At this point, we got completely and totally lost. We lost the trail and ended up relying on Cedric’s satellite GPS on his phone to find our way back to the parking lot. In the process we found this reservoir lake.

Photobucket

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, we then drove all up and down Lookout Mountain. At one point, overlooking a sheer dropoff down to the city, Cedric says “You want to get out and take pictures?” Now at this point I had fallen on 3 different rocks and was pretty much done with these crazy heights. So I told him no you crazy lunatic! Keep driving!

However, we did stop at a touristy spot and a gentleman (really nice guy) took this picture

Photobucket

From this safe vantage point, I snapped a picture of Downtown Denver.

Photobucket

And a picture of Golden (and the Coors factory)

Photobucket

In Golden, we witnessed weed being sold out of an ice cream truck (weird to say the least) and then Cedric got high and thought this dragon was attacking him. LSD is a bad drug. Just saying.

Photobucket

When Cedric sobered up, we headed into downtown Golden which is very much into the whole “Being a cowboy” thing. Oh and they also have a thing for sculptures.

Photobucket

You made a time machine out of a Delorean?!! I can honestly say I’ve never seen one of these in the wild but Cedric didn’t miss it.

Photobucket

Cedric decided to get on a little stationary bike…hey uhm, dude, that bike isn’t going anywhere and I doubt you’re getting any exercise on it.

Photobucket

Oh hey, Golden is a mining town!

Photobucket

There’s a nice rushing stream passing right through downtown. The water level was exceptionally high when we were there and a lot of the pedestrian walkway was under water.

Photobucket

Did I mention that Golden likes sculptures? There was one of these things on just about every corner.

Photobucket

Finally, we settled down for some dinner and this really nice Bar and Grill – Blue Canyon.

Photobucket

Great little place. I had the BBQ Bacon Burger, Cedric had Bleu Cheese Burger.

Photobucket

Sunday was church, Frisbee at Wash Park and lunch but being thoroughly exhausted from Saturday the camera stayed packed.

So we end the picture tour with a nice fist bump between me and Cedric for a day well spent!

Oh last but not least, at the airport someone tried to get priority boarding on a Southwest flight because he was "feeling under the weather". For real?!?!

Gotta love America.

New Year's 2010

For New Years, we had special guests. Our friends from Milwaukee and their nearly 5-year old triplets.

We drank sparkling grape juice, played video games and celebrated memories of years gone by.

Here are a few videos of us playing the video game "Rock Band".

Looking Back - Turkey and Santa

At long last we come to years end 2009. Grandma Chris finally gets to spend some quality time with her namesake.

We all sat down for dinner. At front left (apparently unaware that I was taking pictures) is Char's mother Grandma "Petunia".

Grandpa Char snagged the baby at meal time, mostly because he eats his dinner three time faster than anyone else.

Clearly in lighter spirits now, Grandma Petunia shares a laugh with Uncle Cedric (not pictured).

And Uncle Zachary wore the most ridiculous costume you've ever seen.

On to 2010!
